How area conversion works
Every area unit is a fixed multiple of a square meter. Converting is two multiplications:
- Step 1: multiply by the "from" unit’s factor to get square meters.
- Step 2: divide by the "to" unit’s factor to get the answer.
- Area scales with the square of length: 1 m = 3.28084 ft, but 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² — always square the linear factor.
| Unit | Square meters | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Square foot | 0.092903 | US homes, rooms |
| Acre | 4,046.86 | US land parcels |
| Hectare | 10,000 | Land worldwide (metric) |
| Square mile | 2,589,988 | Cities, regions |
The acre’s odd size (43,560 sq ft) is medieval: one chain by one furlong — the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day.
Worked example
Convert 1 acre to square feet. Step 1: 1 × 4,046.86 = 4,046.86 m². Step 2: 4,046.86 ÷ 0.092903 = 43,560 sq ft.
The same acre is 0.404686 hectares (4,046.86 ÷ 10,000) — a handy rule of thumb: an acre is about 40% of a hectare, or 2.47 acres per hectare.
How to use the area converter
All conversions run through square meters internally, so any pair of units works.
Step by step
- Enter the value. Any positive number, including decimals.
- Pick the "from" unit. The unit your measurement is currently in.
- Pick the "to" unit. The unit you want the answer in.
- Press Calculate. The converted value appears up top; the breakdown shows the same area in all ten units.
- Use the table to compare at a glance — no need to re-run for each unit.
Acres vs. hectares: which should you use?
It depends on your audience, not the land:
| Acre | Hectare | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 4,046.86 m² | 10,000 m² |
| Used in | US, UK (informal) | Most of the world |
| Feels like | ~75% of a football field | ~1.4 football fields |
| Convert | × 2.471 → hectares | × 0.4047 → acres |
US listings quote acres; international and scientific contexts use hectares. A length converter handles the one-dimensional side when you need distances rather than areas.
Real-world sizes to calibrate your intuition
Raw numbers like "2,500 m²" mean nothing until anchored:
- Parking space: ~12 m² (~130 sq ft)
- Tennis court: ~261 m² (~2,800 sq ft)
- Football field (incl. end zones): ~5,350 m² (~1.32 acres)
- City block (Manhattan): ~2 hectares (~5 acres)
- Central Park: ~341 hectares (~843 acres)
When a listing says "0.25 acres", picture a quarter of a football field — about 1,000 m², plenty for a house with a yard. These anchors make the converter’s output instantly meaningful.
Why area units are so weird
Length units are tidy; area units inherited centuries of farming history:
- Acre: the area ploughable in a day — 1 chain (22 yards) × 1 furlong (220 yards) = 43,560 sq ft.
- Hectare: the metric cleanup — exactly 100 m × 100 m = 10,000 m².
- Square mile: 640 acres, the unit of US land surveys and townships.
- Rood, perch, barn: historical curiosities (a barn is 10−28 m², used in nuclear physics!).
Modern practice is converging on square meters and hectares worldwide, with acres persisting in US real estate. The converter speaks all of them fluently.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert acres to square feet?
Multiply by 43,560. One acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft (4,046.86 m²). So 2.5 acres = 108,900 sq ft.
How many acres are in a hectare?
2.471 acres per hectare. Conversely, one acre is 0.4047 hectares. Hectares are the metric standard; acres dominate US listings.
How do you convert square meters to square feet?
Multiply by 10.7639. A 100 m² apartment is about 1,076 sq ft. Remember area uses the squared linear factor (3.28084² = 10.7639).
What is the formula for area conversion?
Convert via square meters: value × (from-unit factor) ÷ (to-unit factor). Each unit has a fixed factor — e.g. acre 4,046.86, sq ft 0.092903, hectare 10,000.
How big is an acre visually?
About 75% of an American football field, or roughly a 208 ft × 208 ft square. A quarter-acre (~1,000 m²) fits a typical suburban house with a yard.
How many square feet are in a square mile?
27,878,400 sq ft — that is 640 acres. Square miles suit cities and regions, not backyards.
Why is an acre 43,560 square feet?
Medieval farming: one chain (22 yards) by one furlong (220 yards) — the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day. The metric hectare (10,000 m²) was designed as its tidy replacement.
