How to Use the Pet Grooming Van Insurance Cost Calculator
Getting your insurance total takes six quick steps. The tool adds the premiums the way an insurance quote lists them, so you can compare your own quotes line by line.
- Type the annual commercial auto premium for the van. The default of $2,942 is the Insureon median for mobile groomers.
- Type the annual general liability premium. The default of $598 is the Insureon median.
- Type the annual professional liability and animal bailee premium, or 0 if your policy bundles it.
- Type the annual equipment and inland marine premium, or 0 if it is bundled.
- Type the annual workers compensation premium, or 0 if you work alone.
- Type the number of vans the policies cover. Press Calculate, or press Enter. The annual total appears first and large, with the monthly cost and the cost per van below. Press Reset to clear the form and start over.

The Pet Grooming Van Insurance Formula
Annual total = Commercial auto + General liability + Professional liability + Equipment + Workers compensation, where Monthly cost = Annual total ÷ 12 and Cost per van = Annual total ÷ Vans. Commercial auto covers accidents, theft, vandalism and weather damage to the van. General liability covers injury and property damage claims from clients. Professional liability covers grooming mistakes, animal bailee covers pets in your care, equipment cover protects tools and the rig in transit, and workers compensation covers employees who get hurt on the job.
The formula is a plain sum because each coverage is priced and sold separately. That is also why the tool asks for each premium instead of one total. If a quote bundles two coverages into one price, enter the bundled price under one line and 0 under the other so nothing is counted twice.

Worked Example: One Van, Full Cover
A mobile groomer with one van pays $2,942 a year for commercial auto, $598 for general liability, $400 for professional liability and animal bailee, and $300 for equipment cover. She works alone, so workers compensation is $0. Here is exactly what the calculator does.
- Annual total = $2,942.00 + $598.00 + $400.00 + $300.00 + $0.00 = $4,240.00.
- Monthly cost = $4,240.00 ÷ 12 = $353.33.
- Cost per van = $4,240.00 ÷ 1 = $4,240.00.
As a check, Pet Business Insurance puts a well covered mobile grooming operation at $4,000 to $7,000 a year, or about 3 to 8 percent of revenue, and Insureon puts commercial auto alone at a median of $2,942 a year. Our $4,240 total sits at the low end of that range, which fits a single van with no employees.
What Each Coverage Costs on Its Own
Commercial auto is the biggest line for a mobile groomer, and it is the one that separates mobile grooming from salon grooming. The table below uses the medians Insureon publishes and the ranges Pet Business Insurance lists for Texas, so you can see where your own premiums land.
| Coverage | Typical annual cost | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial auto | $1,600 to $2,942 | Every mobile groomer |
| General liability | $300 to $598 | Every groomer |
| Business owner policy | About $962 | Groomers who want liability plus property in one policy |
| Professional liability | $300 to $600 | Groomers who want cover for grooming mistakes |
| Equipment and inland marine | $200 to $500 | Mobile groomers with a fitted van |
Our worked example uses the Insureon medians for auto and liability, which is why the $4,240 total looks low next to the $4,000 to $7,000 range for a well covered operation. Add workers compensation for one employee and the total climbs by more than $1,000, and a second van doubles the auto line.
What Moves Your Premium Up or Down
Claims history moves the premium most. A clean record earns lower rates, while a claim in the last few years pushes every line up. Van value is next. A basic van setup costs far less to insure than a fully customized grooming vehicle with high end built in tools, because the insurer has more to replace after a crash or a theft.
Service volume matters too. More appointments mean more miles, more pets in your care and more chances for something to go wrong, so insurers ask about it. Location matters as well, since some cities regulate groomers and some states have higher auto rates. Keep the van maintained, train staff on handling, and document every appointment, because all three lower the risk the insurer prices.
Common Pet Grooming Van Insurance Mistakes
The most common mistake is insuring the van on a personal auto policy. A personal policy does not cover a vehicle used for business, so a claim can be denied outright. A mobile grooming van needs commercial auto cover, and the median of $2,942 a year is the price of that protection.
The second mistake is skipping animal bailee cover. General liability does not cover a pet that is hurt during grooming, and that is the claim a groomer is most likely to face. The third mistake is forgetting equipment cover for the rig in transit. Tools and dryers are stolen from vans more often than from salons, so price that line before you skip it. Frequently asked questions
How much does pet grooming van insurance cost?
A mobile groomer typically pays $4,000 to $7,000 a year for full cover, or about 3 to 8 percent of revenue. Commercial auto alone runs a median of $2,942 a year, and general liability runs about $598 a year.
What insurance does a mobile pet groomer need?
Commercial auto for the van, general liability for client claims, professional liability and animal bailee for pets in your care, equipment cover for the rig, and workers compensation once you have employees.
Why does a mobile groomer pay more than a salon groomer?
The van adds commercial auto insurance, which a salon does not need, plus inland marine cover for tools in transit. The auto line alone is a median of $2,942 a year.
Does personal auto insurance cover a grooming van?
No. A personal policy does not cover a vehicle used for business, so a claim can be denied. A grooming van needs a commercial auto policy.
What is animal bailee insurance?
It covers pets that are lost, hurt or killed while in your care. General liability does not cover grooming injuries, so animal bailee is the cover that protects you against the claim groomers face most.
Can I lower my grooming van insurance cost?
Yes. Keep a clean claims record, choose a van that costs less to replace, bundle coverages into one policy, raise the deductible, and document appointments and staff training. Get quotes from at least three insurers before renewal.
