How word counts become pages

A page count depends on spacing, not just the number of words. A single-spaced page holds about 500 words, while a double-spaced page holds about 250 words, so the same essay is twice as long double-spaced.

These are standard estimates used for essays and manuscripts. Font size, margins, and headings can change the exact count, but the estimates below are a reliable starting point for planning.

1000 words is about 4 pages double-spaced and 2 pages single-spaced.

Formula and worked example

Pages = word count / words per page

Single-spaced: words per page = 500. Double-spaced: words per page = 250.

Reading time = word count / 200 words per minute

Worked example: 1000 words double-spaced. Pages = 1000 / 250 = 4.00 pages. Reading time = 1000 / 200 = 5 minutes. The same 1000 words single-spaced gives 1000 / 500 = 2.00 pages.

Comparison chart: single-spaced 500 words per page versus double-spaced 250 words per page, with 1000 words shown as 2 pages single-spaced and 4 pages double-spaced
Spacing doubles the page count: 1000 words is 2 pages single-spaced, 4 pages double-spaced.

Single vs double spacing and tips

Most school and university essays are double-spaced, while reports, articles, and web content are usually single-spaced. Check your assignment instructions before you convert, because the spacing choice changes the answer completely.

If you are checking a test or assignment length, the test score calculator can help you turn points into a percentage once the work is marked.

For a full course mark made up of several assignments, use the grade calculator to combine weighted scores.

Count only the main text unless your instructions say otherwise. Some word counts include headings and references, and some do not, so use the same count your teacher or editor will use.

Frequently asked questions

About 4 pages double-spaced and 2 pages single-spaced, using 250 and 500 words per page.

How many words are on a single-spaced page?

About 500 words on a standard page with normal margins and font size.

How many words are on a double-spaced page?
