How the Conversion Works
English groups digits in threes, and each group is read with its own scale word. The converter splits your number into triads from the right: 1,234,567 becomes 1 | 234 | 567, read as one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven.
Each triad is spelled independently with the hundred-tens-ones rules, then paired with its scale word. Decimals are handled separately: each digit after the point is read individually, so 12.45 becomes twelve point four five, never twelve point forty-five.

Hyphens, Tens, and Teens
Compound tens from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen; the round tens and the teens are single words. Hundred is always singular in counting (five hundred, not five hundreds), and thousand, million, and billion never take a plural when they follow a number.
The converter applies short-scale naming, the standard in the US, the UK, and international finance: a billion is a thousand million (10^9), a trillion is a thousand billion (10^12). This matters because some European traditions use the long scale, where a billion means a million million.
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Teens are single words | thirteen, seventeen |
| Compound tens take hyphens | twenty-one, ninety-nine |
| Hundreds stay singular | three hundred, not three hundreds |
| Scale words stay singular | two million, not two millions |
| Decimals read digit by digit | 4.05 is four point zero five |
Writing Numbers on Checks
The classic use of number-to-words is the check line: the words control over the figures if they ever disagree, under the Uniform Commercial Code. Write the dollars in words, then the cents as a fraction over 100: one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100.
For checks, UPPERCASE is the convention, which is why the case selector is there. Spell the amount once, write the fraction for cents, and never leave a gap where an extra word could be inserted.

Scale Words: Thousand to Trillion
Each new scale word is a thousand times the last. A million is a thousand thousand, a billion is a thousand million, and a trillion is a thousand billion. The converter names whole numbers up to 999 trillion, which covers every realistic invoice, population figure, or budget.
| Scale word | Value | Digits |
|---|---|---|
| Thousand | 10^3 | 4 |
| Million | 10^6 | 7 |
| Billion | 10^9 | 10 |
| Trillion | 10^12 | 13 |
Negatives and Zero
Negative numbers simply add the word negative (or minus in speech) at the front: -7 becomes negative seven. Zero on its own is zero, and leading zeros in the whole part are ignored, so 007 reads as seven.
Inside decimals, zeros count: 4.05 is four point zero five, because each decimal digit is named. A trailing decimal point with no digits is dropped.
Common Writing Mistakes
The most frequent error is inserting and between hundred and the rest: one hundred and twenty-three is conversational British usage, while formal American style writes one hundred twenty-three. The converter uses the formal style without and.
Another is hyphenating the teens or the round tens (thir-teen, twen-ty are wrong), and pluralizing scale words after a number. For counting words in a finished document rather than spelling numbers, the word counter picks up where this tool leaves off.
