Wedding Cake Cost Calculator
Work out what your wedding cake will cost before you order it. Enter how many servings you need, pick a design and a price per slice, then add delivery, decorations and any venue cutting fee. The calculator shows the cake cost, the extras and the total, step by step, with the cost per serving. Free, no sign-up, everything runs in your browser.
Formula: Total = (Servings × Price per slice) + Delivery and setup + Decorations and extras + (Servings × Cutting fee per serving). With a sheet cake, Servings × Price per slice becomes (Display servings × Price per slice) + (Sheet servings × $2.50).

How to Use the Wedding Cake Cost Calculator
Getting an answer takes six quick steps.
- Enter the number of servings, which is the number of guests who will eat cake.
- Pick a design. Simple buttercream is $4 a slice, decorated is $6, elaborate is $10 and sculpted is $15. Change the price per slice to match your bakery quote.
- Pick the number of tiers. The calculator checks your servings against the usual capacity for that tier count and tells you if you may need more tiers or a sheet cake.
- Choose whether to add a sheet cake. With one, you pay the full price only for the display servings, and the rest are cut from a plain sheet cake at $2.50 a serving.
- Enter delivery and setup, decorations and extras, and the venue cake cutting fee per serving if your venue charges one. Enter 0 where nothing applies.
- Press Calculate, or press Enter. The total appears first and large, with the cake cost, the extras and the cost per serving below. Press Reset to start over.

The Wedding Cake Cost Formula
Total = (Servings × Price per slice) + Delivery and setup + Decorations and extras + (Servings × Cutting fee per serving). With a sheet cake, the first part changes to (Display servings × Price per slice) + (Sheet servings × $2.50), where sheet servings are total servings minus display servings.
Servings is the number of guests who will eat cake. Price per slice is what your bakery charges for one serving, and it depends on the design. Delivery and setup covers transport and stacking the tiers at the venue. Decorations and extras covers a topper, fresh flowers or sugar flowers. Cutting fee per serving is what the venue charges to cut and plate each slice. Cost per serving is the total divided by servings, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Worked Example: A 150-Serving Decorated Cake
You need 150 servings from a decorated 3-tier cake at $6 a slice, with a sheet cake behind it. The display cake serves 50, the sheet cake serves 100 at $2.50 a serving, and delivery costs $75.
- Display cake = 50 servings × $6.00 = $300.00.
- Sheet cake = 100 servings × $2.50 = $250.00.
- Cake cost = $300.00 + $250.00 = $550.00.
- Add delivery and setup: $550.00 + $75.00 = $625.00.
- Cost per serving = $625.00 ÷ 150 = $4.17.
A full tiered cake for all 150 servings would cost 150 × $6.00 = $900.00, so the sheet cake saves $350.00. As a check, a 100-serving decorated cake at $6 a slice with $75 delivery and no sheet cake costs $600.00 + $75.00 = $675.00, which sits inside the usual $300 to $700 range for a mid-size wedding cake.
What a Wedding Cake Costs Per Slice
Most couples pay $3 to $8 per slice for a standard custom cake, according to Zola, and The Knot puts the average total at $540, with most couples spending $300 to $700. The table below shows the four designs this calculator uses, with the total for 120 servings at each price.
| Design | Per slice | 120 servings | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple buttercream | $4 | $480 | A small wedding with a plain finish |
| Decorated | $6 | $720 | Most weddings, with piped detail or fresh flowers |
| Elaborate | $10 | $1,200 | Fondant, sugar flowers or hand painting |
| Sculpted | $15 | $1,800 | A showpiece or shaped cake |
Fondant adds cost because the material costs more and takes 45 to 90 minutes longer to apply, and bakers typically charge 30 to 50 percent more for a fondant cake than the same design in buttercream. Specialty flavors and premium fillings usually add $0.50 to $2 per slice, so always get a written quote from your own baker.
The Sheet Cake Trick and Other Ways to Save
The sheet cake trick is the biggest saving most couples can make. Order a small display cake for the cutting photos, then serve the rest of the guests from plain sheet cakes cut in the kitchen. In the worked example it saves $350, and WeddingCalcs puts the saving at 40 to 50 percent of the full cake price.
Buttercream instead of fondant is the next saving, worth $150 to $400 on a typical three-tier cake. Fresh flowers from your florist cost a fraction of handcrafted sugar flowers, and one flavor across all tiers avoids the $0.50 to $2 per slice that specialty flavors add.
Compare quotes on the same basis before you book, because one quote may include delivery and another may not. Work out any discount with our percentage calculator, and fit the cake into the wider wedding spend with our budget calculator.
Common Wedding Cake Cost Mistakes
Forgetting the venue cutting fee is the most common mistake. The venue charges $2 to $5 per slice to cut and plate a cake it did not make, so at $3 a slice for 150 guests that adds $450 to what looked like a finished cake budget. Ask the venue about it before you sign the bakery order, and enter it in the calculator so every quote is compared all-in.
Ordering for every guest is the second mistake. Count only the guests who will eat cake, and ask the baker how many wedding servings each tier cuts, because wedding servings are smaller than party servings. A 2-tier cake usually serves 40 to 60, a 3-tier cake serves 80 to 120, and a 4-tier cake serves 150 to 200.
