How the Calculation Works

The calculator subtracts the two dates with full calendar awareness: real month lengths and leap years, not 30-day approximations. The years-months-days breakdown counts whole calendar months first, so March 15 to June 20 is 3 months and 5 days, not 97 divided by 30.

Total days is the exact day count between the dates. The next anniversary is built by taking the start date's month and day in the current year, rolling to next year if it already passed, with February 29 landing on February 28 in non-leap years.

Leap Years and Tricky Dates

Leap years are handled by the date math itself: the day count between two dates simply includes every February 29 in range. A couple together since February 29, 2020 has genuinely lived through more days than one together since March 1, 2020, and the totals reflect that.

February 29 start dates get February 28 anniversaries in common years, the standard convention. End-of-month starts are safe too: a January 31 start correctly yields February 28 or 29 as the next monthly marker, never March 3.

Worked Example

Take a start date of March 15, 2022 and an end date of June 20, 2024. Full years: 2. Remaining months: March 15 to June 15 is 3 months. Remaining days: June 15 to June 20 is 5 days. Result: 2 years, 3 months, 5 days.

Total days: 828. Total weeks: 118. The next anniversary after June 20, 2024 is March 15, 2025, the 3rd anniversary. Enter those dates above to verify every figure.

Milestone Anniversaries

Traditional anniversary names turn the count into a gift guide. The famous ones are silver at 25 and gold at 50, but the full ladder runs from paper to diamond.

Beyond Weddings

Any recurring date works: work anniversaries, business founding days, sobriety milestones, or the day you moved to a new city. The math is identical; only the label changes.

Set the end date into the future to preview a milestone: enter a founding date and next year's date to see exactly how many days until the 10th anniversary, useful for planning the celebration while there is still time to book a venue.

Counting Tips

Accuracy lives or dies on the start date: one day off shifts every total. Use the actual event date, not the month you remember it being in. For relationships, agree once on which date counts, the first date, the official start, and never revisit it.

For pure age math rather than anniversaries, the age calculator breaks a birth date into the same years-months-days format, and the days alive calculator counts every single day lived.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate an anniversary?

Subtract the start date from the end date with calendar-accurate math: count full years, then full months, then remaining days, accounting for leap years and real month lengths.

How many days until my next anniversary?

Enter your start date above; the calculator finds the next occurrence of its month and day and counts the days from today.

What if my anniversary is February 29?

In non-leap years it is observed on February 28, the standard convention the calculator uses.

What is the 25th anniversary called?

Silver. The 50th is gold, the 10th is tin, the 5th is wood, the 1st is paper, and the 60th is diamond.

Can I use this for work anniversaries?

Yes. Any recurring date works: employment start dates, business founding days, and personal milestones all use the same calculation.

Why do month counts differ from days divided by 30?

Months have 28 to 31 days, so dividing by 30 is an approximation. The calculator counts whole calendar months, which is exact.

Does it handle future end dates?

Yes. Set the end date ahead to preview how old an event will be on a future date, such as a coming milestone anniversary.
